Our Top Gift Picks for Dad

Our Top Gift Picks for Dad
10.06.2021

Not sure what to get dear ol’ Dad for Fathers’ Day (yes, it’s just around the corner – 20th June 2021 here in Singapore)? Here are our top 5 picks for gifts under $200 from Napoleon Grills & Accessories:

#1 Pro Pizza Stone with Pizza Wheel, $75
With the Napoleon Pizza Pro, Dad can make fresh pizzas with his favourite ingredients right at home! The ceramic surface of the stone is porous and takes the moisture away from the pizza crust so that you’ll get that beautiful crisp crust every time.

Of course, you’re not just limited to making pizzas on this ceramic plate – use it to bake cookies and pastries on the grill too! It’s fun for the whole family. Pair this up with the Napoleon Pizza Spatula and Rocking Pizza Cutter for that perfect pizza gift package!

#2 Roasting Pan with Cutting Board, $85.60
When it comes to versatility, we love Napoleon’s new roasting pan with cutting board combination. Use them together by chopping ingredients on the board and pushing them straight into the pan below, or use them separately as a rotisserie pan on the grill and a cutting board on the side. Either way, this will make a great gift for any Dad who’s a BBQ lover or likes to get hands-on in the kitchen.

#3 14″ Charcoal Kettle, $139
Has Dad always wanted a grill but there’s never really been much space in that tiny apartment planter area to store a full 22″ kettle? Consider this 14 inch Napoleon Charcoal Kettle Grill that’s affordable enough for you not to have to break the bank. With this compact and portable grilling baby, Dad can enjoy the convenience of having a BBQ anytime he likes. It even comes with a proper, albeit mini, charcoal basket inside and a tiny removable ash catcher tray below.

#4 Bluetooth Thermometer, $130
The ACCU-PROBE™ Bluetooth Thermometer from Napoleon is one of those gadgets that has really made our grilling lives easier! This thermometer links up to the Napoleon app on your phone and has preset temperatures for the different kinds of meats you plan on cooking. Once its set, rest assured that the thermometer will send an alert to the app about the doneness of your meats. It’s definitely handy when Dad has to leave his grill on its own to entertain guests or check on the kids. Even though the thermometer comes with two probes, you have the option of adding on another two for $42 to make it a total of 4 probes to be used at the same time.

#5 Chicken Roaster & Wok, $43
Grilling chicken wings isn’t the only option you have when preparing chicken on the barbecue! Another fantastic way to do chicken on the grill is to roast it, and it’s so easy to do it with this chicken roaster and wok set. Simply marinade a whole chicken, stick it on the roaster (add your fave veggies on the wok below if you want sides as well) and place it in the centre of a pre-heated grill. You should have a beautiful meal in about 20 minutes. No fuss needed to have tender and juicy chicken for dinner! This roaster and wok works not just on a grill but in the oven as well.

Tip: If your Dad has a 3 or 4 burner grill, use only the outer 2 burners on the left and right. If he has a 2 burner grill, use only 1 burner and rotate the wok with chicken halfway through the roasting process.

Earthen Wonder

Earthen Wonder
16.09.2020

You might have heard of brands like the Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primo – what do these names have in common? The Kamado-Style Ceramic Grill!

The Liberty Kokomo Ceramic Grill in 21, 23, 26 inch sizes.

What’s a Kamado-Style grill and Do I need one?
The Kamado BBQ is actually a traditional Japanese cooking vessel made out of earthenware and is able to maintain both high and low temperatures which makes it perfect for grilling, searing, baking and smoking with.

If you love experimenting with different types of cooking methods and have a bit of time on your hands, the Kamado grill might just be the BBQ for you because of how versatile it is. With a busy schedule, I personally find myself using my gas grill more often than the charcoal one because it’s just so convenient. But if you are a die-hard charcoal user, you might just want to invest in one of these.

Where can I buy a grill like this?
As the Kamado is a rather niche product, you won’t find too many places selling this type of BBQ. You can get the Liberty Kokomo Kamado Grill on The BBQ Grill Store – there are 3 sizes available – 21, 23, and 26, in black, green and blue (blue is only available for the 21). The Liberty Komomo comes with a BBQ Cover, Heat Deflector, Pizza Stone, Stainless Steel Warming Rack/Double Cooking Grid.

Prices start from $1250 (SGD) for the 21 inch Kokomo grill, all accessories mentioned above are include, as well as island-wide delivery and assembly.

The Accessories that the Liberty Kokomo comes with.

You can also bring these in from overseas – but do be careful when doing so. Prices seem tempting from overseas online stores, however, look out for some factors that might make the final price go up:
1. Weight & Freight: As the Kamado grill is made of ceramic, they are rather heavy (a 21 inch grill is about 70kg at least, and that’s one of the smaller sizes). This will make the freight go up when shipping from overseas.
2. Accessories: What sort of accessories does it come with for the price you’ll be paying.
3. Setting it up: As mentioned before, the kamado is a pretty heavy BBQ so it’ll take more than one person to set this grill up. It doesn’t do well when dropped either, since its made of ceramic.

Available in different colours!

BARBECUE LUNCH PREP WITH ASIAN FLAVORS

BARBECUE LUNCH PREP WITH ASIAN FLAVORS
22.01.2020

Recipe by @inspirecookeat

If you’ve ever had busy weeks working but considered eating healthier, you would have likely heard of meal prep. For the uninitiated, meal prep involves bulk cooking meals at one go to last for the week.

EAT HEALTHIER

This kind of eating plan is popular with gym-goers and health-conscious eaters, due to the flexibility of being able to choose what goes into your meals. Prepping meals ahead of time also has the added benefit of being money saving, as food is purchased in bulk.

EASY ON THE WALLET

I would say the only real drawback to meal prepping is taking the time to cook them on a weekend for the week! The payoff is more than worth it though; as you can control your portions, have meals that are good for you, and are also easier on your wallet.

Inspirecookeat has come up with a great meal prep idea that you can make on the grill! Try this meal prep when you have taken out your barbeque for the weekend with friends, or you feel like you’d want to make use of good weather. For this recipe, he has used the Napoleon TravelQ TQ285X.

In our meal prep, we use store-bought Asian soup mixes (laksa, and tom yum, with no added msg) to boost flavor with minimal effort. Just pick your favorite brand, and you are good to go!

Recipe Notes

  • Use a variety of sweet potatoes (gold, purple, japanese) to mix things up!
  • The chicken breasts need to be of even thickness and flat to cook evenly on the grill. Pound them slightly to flatten if required.
  • When reheating, ensure all the food is hot. Reheating will also slightly wilt the bok choi, but this is desired.
  • Be sure to open the lid slightly for steam to vent when reheating in a microwave!
  • When grilling, the vegetables may not all cook at the same rate. In which case, remove the cooked ones, reposition the remainder and use the free space to cook the chicken!

Known as the Taiwanese Sandwich, the Gua Bao is very similar to the Singaporean favourite Kong Bak Bao. Chef Andrea uses her Napoleon BBQ daily for interesting recipes like these Pork Belly Steamed Buns which feature delicious and tender pork belly that has been seared, then braised to intense tenderness and then wrapped in pillowy soft bao steamed buns. Top these with your favorites like cool and fresh sliced cucumber, sliced sweet or hot peppers, threads of enoki mushrooms, and even peppery baby arugula.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR STAINLESS STEEL GRILL GRATES & KEEP THEM LOOKING LIKE NEW

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR STAINLESS STEEL GRILL GRATES & KEEP THEM LOOKING LIKE NEW
20.01.2020

By Napoleon Grills

HOW TO CLEAN BBQ GRATES

The best way to clean stainless steel BBQ grates is to clean them after each use. Give your stainless steel cooking grids a scrub with your stainless steel grill brush, or our bristle free grill brush. Doing this while the grill is still hot will mean you don’t have to do it when you go to cook next time, and goes a long way to ensuring your stainless steel cooking grates remain looking like new.

If you love your grill as much as I do, you want to keep it looking as pretty as possible. Keeping your grill clean serves another purpose, other than looking great, it ensures that your Napoleon barbecue is in top working order and remains that way for its entire life. Since your cooking grids bear the brunt of barbecue life, you want to know how to clean them, and how to get your stainless steel grill grates looking like new again.

TWO SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEPING GRIDS CLEAN:

  1. Clean your grids while the grill is hot after you are done barbecuing. It’s a great way to pass the time while your meat is resting.
  2. If you forgot, preheat your grill to 260°C+ (high) for 10 to 15 minutes before you begin cooking. Once the grill has gotten nice and hot, use the brush to clear away any debris from your last grilling session.

STUBBORN STAINS ON YOUR GRIDS

Unfortunately, from time to time, something stubborn sticks to your cooking surface, don’t fret. Try these tips instead.

  • A sheet of foil, shiny side down, over the offending area while the grill is heating up to 260°C (high) should loosen the problem. When the grill is hot just brush the offending detritus away with your grill brush. **Please consider wearing Heat Resistant Barbecue Gloves when doing this as the grill will be very hot.**
  • As a last resort, soaking your filthy stainless steel grids in hot water, then scrubbing gently will help get your grids squeaky clean. Just remember that in doing this, you are stripping off the seasoning you have built up and the grids will need to be re-seasoned. Don’t worry you can reapply that seasoning by following our instructions on how to season your stainless steel cooking grates.

Why does the tinfoil trick work? The tinfoil will form a concentrated convection (like when you grill with the lid down) over the offending area. This also traps steam if there is moisture present. It will break down the baked on gunk so that it is easier to remove with a grill brush, very similar to when you turn on the self cleaning in your oven.

HOW TO GET YOUR STAINLESS GRILL GRATES LOOKING LIKE NEW

To get those grids looking brand new… well, you can’t. Once used, your cooking grids will begin developing what is called a patina. It’s a combination of discoloration from heat, and a buildup of oils on your barbecue cooking grates that will protect the stainless steel from corrosion and create a non-stick surface for you to cook on. That isn’t to say that you can’t have some nice looking grids. As outlined in the video, if you use a great, high-temperature oil like Crisco, palm oil, or lard to season your grids every few uses, and keep those grills clean, the grids will remain in great condition.

As always, we recommend that you exercise caution when using a grill brush and remember to perform proper grill brush maintenance to ensure that you aren’t losing bristles.

A Guide to Buying your First BBQ Grill

A Guide to Buying your First BBQ Grill
21.10.2019

Let’s face it – Singapore isn’t really known for its DIY BBQ culture. Outside of the occasional East Coast Park or condominium pool-side party on a communal charcoal pit, many locals don’t really have much experience with BBQs, let alone even dare to dream about owning one of their own.

However, we’d like to change things a little.

Barbequing doesn’t always need to be a special occasion activity and it doesn’t always have to be seen as a hassle. It can be easy and suitable for any kind of lifestyle and home.

When I got my Brazilian husband his first gas grill back when we were still dating, he was using it four to five times a week. It wasn’t just because grilling (or churrasco) is a big part of his culture, it was also the convenience that came along with having a gas BBQ.

My husband with his first gas grill, an older season of the Napoleon LEX485RSIB.

The reality was that we were able to do away with washing piles of plates, pots and pans because we cooked directly on the grill, and we served steak as finger food slices on a chopping board with seasoned manioc flour (farofa) on the side. Grilling was the fast option and the clean-up after was a breeze (especially because he didn’t have a helper).

Returning to what I said about grilling being easy and suitable for any kind of lifestyle and home, I really mean it. Whether you’re a meat or veggie lover, own a house with a garden or are an apartment dweller, single or living with a large family, a cooking expert or amateur, there is a BBQ out there for everyone.

Here are just some of our BBQ recommendations for various lifestyles:

For the Steak Lover: Any of the Napoleon Rogue & Prestige Series (with infrared side burner), price starts from $1712

If you’re a die-hard steak lover, the Napoleon range has a fantastic array of grills with the infrared side burner option. This infrared side burner acts as both a regular side burner (to heat up items in pots and pans), as well as a sizzle zone. These babies get real hot, real fast. We’re talking 980 degrees Celsius (1800 degrees Fahrenheit) in seconds!

Napoleon Prestige Pro 500rsib

The ceramic burner in your sizzle zone is lined with tiny holes and grooves, so very little gas is needed to heat up the ceramic. The red glow created by the Infrared sizzle zone is actually short wave infrared energy that is responsible for the intense heat. This extreme heat transfers into the cooking grids which get hot and create those delicious sear marks on your food.

For the Budget Conscious: Char-Broil Classic 2-Burner, $329

Things can get pretty expensive on our little island, so if you’re looking to stay below $500 for a gas grill, consider this 2 burner grill from Char-Broil. It’s a compact, no-frills gas grill that uses Porcelain Coated Wire cooking grates. The real selling points of this BBQ is that given the price and size, it actually has a decent burner BTU of 20,000, and comes with the added bonus of side tables with ample space for a chopping board on one side and plates on the other. This would make for a nice little BBQ for a couple or small family.

Char-Broil Classic 2 Burner

For the Beginner: Liberty Chef Pro, $999
The Liberty Chef Pro is really the perfect BBQ for a beginner who’s just learning the ropes and experimenting with different grilling methods. For just under $1000, this 3 burner grill comes with a ton of features like a motorised rotisserie, cast iron grills and griddle, side burner, warming rack and even one collapsible side table for homes with space constraints. You could do anything from cooking up sunny side up eggs on the griddle to chicken on a rotisserie, or toasting baguettes on the warming rack or even heating up sauces and soups on the side burner – this BBQ is a versatile little kitchen on its own!

Liberty Chef Pro

For the Can’t Decide between Gas or Charcoal: Char-Broil Gas2coal® Hybrid, $899
If you can’t decide between getting a gas or charcoal BBQ, and getting two different types will either take up too much space in your home (or burn a hole in your wallet!), consider the Char-Broil Gas2coal Hybrid BBQ, which is exactly as its name describes. When this 3 burner grill is not being used as a gas BBQ, it can be used as a charcoal one simply by removing the charcoal tray from above the BBQ trolley below, placing it above the burners and lighting it like you would a regular charcoal grill. Do note that you cannot use the gas and charcoal at the same time, or use the gas burners to light the charcoal. However, the side burner can still be used when the charcoal grill is lit.

Char-Broil Gas2coal® Hybrid

For the “Die-die-must-use-charcoal”: Napoleon Charcoal Kettle Pro22K-LEG, $642
Kettle grills are probably the most iconic-looking grill model around, and the most readily available in any major BBQ retailers. So what makes this kettle BBQ from Napoleon stand out from the rest? First of all, unlike other similar BBQs which usually use thin chrome-plated steel wire grill plates, this kettle grill has a solid, heavy-duty cooking grate that will last a while. Another user favourite of this BBQ is the hinged lid attached to the fire bowl. No more having to figure out where to put the lid while you’re barbequing! We also love that the price already includes a BBQ cover, and assembly and delivery costs all in as well.

Napoleon BILEX or BIPRO Built-In Gas BBQs?

Napoleon BILEX or BIPRO Built-In Gas BBQs?
27.08.2019

Condos aren’t the only ones installing built-in BBQs into their counters, private homeowners are too!

There are many benefits to installing a built-in BBQ. One such benefit is the use of the standard Singapore 12.7KG LPG tank. The problem with this standard issue is the size. At 57cm tall, this 12.7KG tank doesn’t fit in most mobile BBQ cabinets, and the ones who manage to squeeze it in are cutting it pretty close.

Napoleon Prestige Bipro665RB at a home in Sixth Avenue
Another Napoleon Prestige Bipro665RB at a home in Stevens
Napoleon Bilex485RB @ Amber Residences

Designing your own counter means being able to customise your own tank cabinet. Of course, you could always get the smaller 9KG gas tank, but the 12.7KG ones last the longest and are the most bang for your buck.

The biggest benefit is of course for aesthetics. It’s the beautiful flushed-in look that makes your BBQ look like it’s part of a whole outdoor kitchen rather than an afterthought. One of our favourite designs was done at a homeowner’s balcony in Jade Mansion.

Prestige BIPRO500RB at an apartment in Jade Mansion

Basically, the homeowner moved his entire kitchen from the inside of his apartment to his balcony, creating a wet kitchen and alfresco dining area fully equipped with a built-in gas and electric cooking hob, fridge, ovens, sinks and of course the Napoleon Prestige BIPRO500RB Gas BBQ (from a previous season). Most balconies are underutilized and seen as a redundant space, however, as BBQ lovers we beg to differ. We love balconies, especially spacious ones!

Napoleon Prestige Bipro500RB at Rezi 35 Condo
Bilex485RB at a Penthouse Unit in Coco Palms condo

But how do you know which built-in BBQ is right for you? Let’s take Napoleon Grills’ Bilex485RB and Prestige Bipro500RB for example. Both BBQ’s are equipped with 4 main burners and 1 rear burner – but besides that you’ll find that the Prestige Bipro500RB comes with a die cast aluminium firebox (longer lasting than welded steel), thicker stainless steel grids and warming rack, as well in built-in lights and knobs lights which are perfect for cooking at night.

Although this seems to make the Bipro500RB a superior BBQ to the Bilex485RB, the latter is also popular because it’s lower in cost, more compact, and easier to install as it does not require an electrical socket for the rear burner ignition and lighting.

Ultimately, whichever built-in model you decide to go with, always make sure to design the counter-top according to specifications and check with your BBQ dealer on the installation process if you are unsure of anything.

These Built-In BBQ grills are available for purchase from The BBQ Grill Store.

Simple & Energy Efficient BBQing

Simple & Energy Efficient BBQing
26.08.2019

One of our most popular electric grills is the Greenplate 300 inbench BBQ.
What makes it so popular? This grill is easy to install and energy efficient. While other similar brands and models require at least a 15 Ampere power source, the Greenplate only requires 7.8 Ampere (which is basically your typical Singaporean household socket). It also only uses 1.8kW per hour, which can mean up to 50% of savings in running costs.

To install this grill, all you need to make a 490 x 490mm cut out in your counter, and fit the grill into this cutout. Make sure to have a power outlet on the inside of the counter where the BBQ is, and also place the fat bin below the BBQ to collect grease.

Just a simple square cut-out!

There’s also the option of making it coin or token-operated too, as seen at My Tampines Hub. Some of the other projects that have installed this BBQ at are Marina Bay Residences, Safra Tampines, The Hillion, Riverbank, Novelty Techpark, the list goes on.
